Introduction

On June 29, 2024, the Machakos Institute of Technology celebrated its annual Cultural Day, theme being “Cultural Diversity through Youth Exposition,” the event brought together more than 800 students which included 87 students showcasing their talents. The whole event was also streamed live on our Facebook page. This affirmed the institute’s commitment to its core values of agility, creativity, and innovation. The following are the activities which took place.

Modeling Competition

One major highlight was the modeling competition, which attracted nine participants (six ladies and three gentlemen) who show cased diverse categories in the competition. The winners were Andrew Muli from ICT department and Deborah Monyancha Bitutu from fashion and design department who were crowned Mr. and Miss MIT 2024.

1st Runners-Up (gentlemen): George Mwongela from electrical engineering department 1st Runners-Up (ladies): Purity Mutua from hospitality department 2nd Runners-Up (gentlemen): Swaleh Koitalel from ICT department 2nd Runners-Up (ladies): Wangui Njeri from social work department.

Cultural Performance/Traditional Dances

The rich cultural heritage of Kenya was brought to life through the following traditional dances:

Maasai Dance: A captivating performance that highlighted the event was the traditions and the energy of the Maa culture.

Kamba Dance: An energetic and colorful display of Kamba traditions.

Kikuyu Dance: chants and graceful performance that offered a glimpse into Kikuyu customs. MIT Modern Dancers: The MIT dancers delivered in modern dance styles, embodying the creativity and innovative spirit of the institute by the Gen Z.

Creative and Professional Exhibitions

 News Reporting

During the cultural highlight, a student showcased her prowess by reporting current national events getting a hats off not only from the judges but the crowd as well.

 Artist Showcase

The gifted artist from the institute displayed a stunning pencil portrait which was a picture of the institute’s director Mr. Benjamin Mutie. This highlighting the creativity and artistic expression nurtured at MIT.

 Fashion and Design

The Fashion and Design Department showcased an impressive collection of items, demonstrating the students’ craftsmanship, innovative designs, and attention to detail.

 Martial Arts

The MIT karate team presented an impressive display of skill, discipline, and agility, captivating the audience with their synchronized moves and powerful demonstrations.

The Cultural Day was not only a showcase of talent but also a platform for community building and cultural exchange. Students, faculty, and guests shared their experiences and reflections on the importance of cultural diversity and unity.

The Machakos Institute of Technology 2024 Cultural Day was a resounding success, celebrating the core values of agility, creativity, and innovation. The event provided a platform for students to express their cultural heritage, professional skills, and creative talents.
