Rooted in Culture, Rising in Unity: A Vibrant Tapestry Unfolds at Machakos Institute of Technology’s Cultural Day 2025

On the excitement drenched grounds of Machakos Boys High School, June 27, 2025, blossomed into a spectacle of tradition, talent, and unity as the Machakos Institute of Technology (MIT) celebrated its much-anticipated Cultural Day. With the resonant theme “Rooted in Culture, Rising in Unity,” the event brought together more than 800 students, faculty, and guests in a joyous celebration of heritage and creativity.

A Celebration of Culture and Identity

From the moment the event began, it was clear that this year’s Cultural Day was more than just an annual tradition—it was a spirited affirmation of MIT’s values: agility, creativity, and innovation. Over 100 students took to the stage, showcasing a dazzling array of talents and cultural expressions that echoed through the hearts of everyone present.

Runway Royalty: Modeling Competition Steals the Show

A standout moment of the day was the spirited modeling competition, which saw nine confident contestants—six ladies and three gentlemen—grace the runway with elegance, poise, and dazzling traditional attire. Each participant embodied the strength and pride of their heritage, strutting to the rhythm of ancestral pride.

Crowned Winners:

Mr. MIT 2025 – George Mwongela (Electrical Department)

Miss MIT 2025 – Jackline Lonte (Hospitality Department)

1st Runners-Up: Swaleh Koitalel (ICT) and Purity Mutua (Hospitality)

2nd Runners-Up: Erick Kasyoki (Fashion & Design) and Glory Munywoki (Fashion & Design)

Dancing Through Heritage: Traditional Performances

The heart of Cultural Day pulsed with the rhythm of Kenya’s diverse traditions. The audience was treated to an exhilarating lineup of traditional dances that transported them across the nation’s rich cultural landscape:

Maasai Dance – A powerful expression of warrior energy and tradition.

Kamba Dance – Colorful, rhythmic, and deeply rooted in Eastern Kenyan culture.

Kikuyu Dance – Elegant chants and movement telling stories of central Kenya.

Taarab Dance – A coastal celebration, fusing Swahili music and dance.

Luhya Dance – Earthy and proud, connecting the past with the present.

Kamba Modern – A unique blend showcasing the evolution of cultural expression.

MIT TTC Modern Dance and MIT Dancers – A vibrant fusion of tradition and contemporary styles, reflecting the creative spirit that defines MIT.

Showcasing Talent and Ingenuity

Cultural Day was not just about tradition—it was also a celebration of innovation, intellect, and artistry:

News Presentation: A budding journalist took the stage, delivering a polished and engaging news broadcast covering current affairs and sports, a performance that displayed journalistic excellence.

Artist Showcase: One student captivated viewers with lifelike portraits of actor Thomas Shelby and MIT’s current student president, Andrew Muli—proof of the artistic talent thriving within MIT’s walls.

Fashion & Design Exhibition: The Department of Fashion and Design stunned the audience with bold, intricate pieces that merged culture with contemporary flair.

Martial Arts Display: MIT’s karate team commanded the arena with synchronized kicks and punches, their performance a testament to discipline, strength, and coordination.

More Than an Event—A Movement

More than just performances, Cultural Day was a heartfelt reminder of the importance of diversity, unity, and shared history. Students and faculty alike found moments of connection, learning, and pride in their roots.

As music faded and the sun dipped behind Machakos hills, one thing was clear: the Machakos Institute of Technology had once again proven that its foundation in culture is not only a source of strength but a springboard for innovation and unity. Through every song, stitch, and step, MIT showed that when culture is honored, communities rise—together.
