MIT 2023 CULTURAL DAY
Cultural Day is an annual event organized by Machakos Institute of Technology.
The event is held to celebrate culture in every aspect of the word and give an opportunity for our students to showcase and also nurture their talents.
Preparations were done by a committee led by the Dean of Students Mr. Ronald Kipkemoi and Mr. Fred Kioko the committee chair.
The committee ensured the event was student centered by involving the students through the planning process.
This year we out sourced a judge for the competitive categories to ensure fairness and objectivity. Our main Judge was Mr. Jones Nzeki who was assisted by Ms. Nancy Njogu who is head of Marketing at the Institute.
The event was held on 1st of July 2023 at Machakos Youth Center.
“Unity in diversity’’ was our theme this year.
MIT comprises of different cultural, social, ethnic, and religious backgrounds hence we chose to celebrate this element of diversity. We appreciate our diversity thus tapping into its strengths.
This year’s MIT Cultural Day was nothing short of Amazing!!!! We were treated to modeling, contemporary and traditional dance, music, spoken word and departmental exhibitions.
In attendance were the Institute’s Director Mr. Benjamin Mutie, Principal Judy Kyania, Principal TTC Serah Ngina, staff and students from all MIT Campuses.
Modeling segment which was the main activity of the day showcased official wear, traditional wear, casual wear, creative wear, Vintage , beach and dinner wear. The models went all the way out to impress the judges making the competition very stiff.
MIT Staff led by the Director and Principals led the team to a dance that the students thoroughly enjoyed and yearned for more gigs from the team.
The exhibition bit gave a taste of creativity and innovation where the School of Fashion and Design had African Family wear and tie & dye designs.
The School of ICT gave a demonstration on cleaning and maintenance of a Computer Desktop as well as designing a Website.
The School of Engineering demonstrated on use of smart bulbs that work only when necessary and go off to save on power thus solving the challenge of bulbs being on when there is natural lighting removing the need of there being a person to switch the bulbs on or off.
Entertainment galore was in plenty with dance crews such as Troopies and Percentage as DJ Spanners kept the music flowing and energy high all through.
The drinking completion using a straw while blindfolded was one amazing session that had the audience in laughter.
We are glad to have seen how students owned the event and showcased in all areas of presentation.
The institution also acknowledged and awarded winners in the various categories for their efforts.
Some of the feedback we had was as follows
- The committee gave a special thank you to our Director for fully sponsoring the event and going a step further to provide snacks for the over 500 participants. Also appreciated members of staff and students support for the event thus making it a success.
- Students in general enjoyed the event wishing it was a termly event, while others suggested it to be a week-long event culminating with the event at the end of the week.
- The reigning Mr. & Miss MIT were elated yet humbled to be carrying the titles of the giant college in Machakos County promising to use the titles for good works.
The event was an absolute success and we look forward to an even greater one come 2024.
